The Reiki Experience

What is Reiki? (pronounced “ray kee”)

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes and catalyzes healing. It was founded by Mikao Usui after intensive study of hands-on healing methods found in Sanskrit. Reiki is administered by gently laying hands upon the fully clothed body, with the idea that an unseen life force energy flows through us and is what contributes to our state of health. If one's life force energy is low, then we are more likely to become ill or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of coping with challenges and living our best lives. It is useful on its own, as well as in conjunction with other treatment modalities. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki is a holistic modality, as it treats the whole person, mind, body and spirit. Results range from subtle to profound.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki is amplified, pure life-force energy. Human beings are created of and animated by this life-force energy. When it is applied via a Reiki practitioner to a patient, the energy flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras and meridians, and flows through the person’s entire energetic field. This nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When the flow of life force is disrupted through life stressors, illness or disease, it leads to diminished function in bodily systems. As human beings, we all go through times when we are under mental, emotional and physical stress, which can affect our health and well-being. Reiki assists with releasing and clearing blocks to our normal energy flow, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy, natural way.

What conditions may be helped with Reiki?

One need not have a “condition” to receive the rejuvenating effects of a Reiki treatment. One may simply have a desire for deep rest and relaxation, or to experience an “energy tune-up” as a way of promoting and maintaining overall balance and health. Others may seek deeper healing support, especially when going through periods of illness, stress and/or grief. Reiki facilitates a return to balance and wellness, whether alone or in conjunction with other medical supports. Those who choose Reiki are often seeking to alleviate some of these common conditions:

·  Overwork, stress, exhaustion

·  Immune system dysfunction

·  Endocrine system dysfunction

·  Disease states

·  Emotional trauma and grief

·  Anxiety and/or depression

·  Headaches and body aches

How long does a treatment take and what is it like?

The patient lies fully clothed upon the Reiki table (or sits in a chair if pain is an issue). Soft, soothing music is played, unless the patient requests total quiet. Hands are placed gently upon the clothed body, or can be held just above the body if preferred. Once the session has begun we generally work in silence. Some people even fall asleep on the table during treatment, which is perfectly fine. Afterwards we will share a bit with each other about the experience and what each of us noticed.

What is a Far-Infrared (FIR) Mat, and what are its benefits?

Clients have a choice of having Reiki (both face up and face down) on a regular Reiki table, or having Reiki on a table with a FIR mat (heated or un-heated). One of the tables in our sanctuary is outfitted with a FIR heated mat, which may be used on its own, or together with a Reiki treatment. The FIR mat is filled with layers of amethyst and tourmaline crystals which naturally emit FIR rays and negative ions (the kind that make us feel good in airy forests and around the ocean and rivers). When amplified with heat, the FIR rays and ions intensify. Benefits from using the FIR mat include relaxation, relief from stress, lowering inflammation, infusing cells with energy, detoxification, grounding, immune system, circulation, and metabolism support, soothing of back, joint and muscle pain, increase oxygen flow to the brain and other organs and cells, and help combat free radicals. Far Infrared heat is safe and deeply penetrates tissues. The FIR amethyst mat has a built-in EMF shield to protect from any harmful electromagnetic fields. There are some contraindications for persons with certain medical conditions using the FIR mat with heat, which we can discuss. It is recommended that you wear loose clothing of organic cotton, linen, bamboo or other natural fibers to best absorb the FIR rays. See the home page for more information.

How often should I have Reiki?

One should seek their own counsel in this regard. It is important that we learn to listen to, and honor, what our body is trying to tell us. If we are generally feeling well and simply seeking relaxation and replenishment, the occasional Reiki session will suffice. Some people choose to come every week or month to improve or maintain optimal health.

For those working with more serious health concerns, it may be useful to come once or twice per week. As noted above, if a person is feeling very ill and/or emotionally worn, or if one is in the midst of a period of intense transformation, it may be useful to schedule a “Reiki Intensive” of 4 days in a row (we will put our schedules together to see when we can both make time to achieve this goal). Shift happens!

What types of results can I expect with Reiki?

Following a session, clients will typically feel very relaxed and rejuvenated, and/or super-charged energetically. You may notice results on any or all levels - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. These results may be immediately apparent, and/or take a few days or so to be noticeable. Remember, Reiki is not magic, yet it can be quite profound. When we are infused with unconditional love energy, the body, mind and spirit tend to respond very favorably. There is no way to predict how a session will affect a person specifically, and you are encouraged to trust that whatever is most needed to happen during a session will take place, depending upon your own particular health goals or issues. As with any type of healing work, Reiki will support you best when you also support yourself by eating healthily, getting enough rest and sleep, incorporating some exercise into your daily routine, etc.

Can I learn Reiki?

Reiki is a very simple healing modality that is easy to learn. Level one, which allows one to do hands-on work with self and others, can be learned in a weekend. Levels two and three can be learned in a day, for those interested in delving more deeply into Reiki practice. I offer Reiki training, all levels, and love to share the love! Let me know if you'd like to know more, or to sign up for training. And of course, there are many other wonderful Reiki teachers out there, as well.

Sessions usually take about 90 minutes start to finish. This includes a little time for introductions, for the patient to rest on the table afterwards, and then to share about what was experienced.

What if I have pain and cannot lie comfortably on a Reiki table?

Most people will be comfortable on a table with enough pillows and bolsters; however, Reiki can also be done with a person sitting in a

chair upon request.

If traditional Reiki is what you're seeking to experience or learn, do a little research and make sure that you are learning from a teacher who has been trained and certified in all levels of Reiki (I, II, III and Master Teacher), and has received and gives the required number of attunements (4 for level one, at least 1 for levels two and three). Please feel free to call me to learn more about my classes, to make sure that they are a fit for you.
